Pedestrian Accidents in Texas

Texas has one of the highest pedestrian fatality rates in the country. In 2022, the Texas Department of Transportation reported over 830 pedestrian deaths across the state, with thousands more injured in collisions. Urban areas like Houston see a high volume of pedestrian traffic, increasing the risk of serious accidents.

Understanding the dangers of pedestrian accidents can help raise awareness and prevent further tragedies. Below are some common causes of pedestrian fatalities:

  • High-Speed Roads – Many pedestrian accidents occur on busy roadways where vehicles travel at higher speeds. The faster a vehicle moves, the greater the impact and likelihood of severe or fatal injuries.
  • Intersection Accidents – Pedestrians are especially vulnerable at intersections, where turning vehicles and failure to yield contribute to deadly crashes.
  • Limited Visibility – Nighttime accidents are common due to poor lighting conditions, making it harder for drivers to see pedestrians until it’s too late.
  • Driver Distraction – Texting, eating, or other distractions take a driver’s focus off the road, increasing the risk of hitting a pedestrian.
  • Pedestrian Right-of-Way Violations – Some accidents happen when pedestrians cross outside designated crosswalks, but many also occur when drivers fail to stop for pedestrians who have the legal right-of-way.

Losing a loved one in a pedestrian accident is devastating, and families often face unexpected financial burdens, including funeral costs and loss of income.
