Pedestrian Accidents in Texas
Texas sees a significant number of pedestrian accidents each year. In 2022, the Texas Department of Transportation reported over 5,000 pedestrian-related crashes, resulting in more than 800 fatalities and thousands of injuries. Many of these incidents occur in urban areas where traffic congestion and high-speed roads increase risks for pedestrians.
Understanding why these accidents happen can help raise awareness and improve safety for everyone on the road. Below are some of the most common causes of pedestrian accidents:
- Failure to Yield to Pedestrians – Drivers are required to yield the right-of-way to pedestrians in crosswalks. However, many crashes happen when drivers fail to stop or misjudge a pedestrian’s movement.
- Jaywalking and Crossing Outside of Crosswalks – While pedestrians should use designated crosswalks, many accidents occur when individuals cross busy roads at unmarked locations.
- Distracted Driving and Walking – Both drivers and pedestrians are more likely to be involved in accidents if they are distracted by cell phones, navigation systems, or other devices.
- Speeding and Reckless Driving – Higher speeds reduce reaction time and increase the severity of collisions, making pedestrian accidents more likely to result in serious injuries or fatalities.
- Poor Lighting and Visibility – Many pedestrian crashes occur at night or in areas with inadequate street lighting, making it harder for drivers to see people walking along or crossing the road.
