HOUSTON, Texas (February 5, 2024) – A young man lost his life early Sunday morning in a hit-and-run crash on State Highway 6.

Authorities reported that the accident occurred at approximately 3:05 a.m. on February 2. A 21-year-old male was attempting to cross the highway from west to east outside of a crosswalk when he was hit by a red Honda CRV. Instead of stopping to help, the driver of the vehicle fled the scene. Emergency personnel arrived and pronounced the victim dead at the location of the crash.

Following an investigation, officers found the abandoned Honda CRV in a nearby parking lot. Authorities are working to identify the driver and determine the events leading up to the fatal collision. Further details regarding potential suspects have not been released at this time.

We offer our deepest condolences to the victim’s loved ones.

Pedestrian Accidents in Texas

Texas has seen a troubling rise in pedestrian accidents in recent years. The Texas Department of Transportation reported over 5,000 pedestrian-related crashes in a single year, with a significant percentage resulting in severe injuries or fatalities. Factors such as poor visibility, driver distraction, and pedestrians crossing outside designated areas contribute to these tragedies.

Understanding pedestrian accidents requires looking at key risks and preventative measures. Below are some important aspects to consider:

  • Common Causes of Pedestrian Accidents – Many pedestrian crashes occur due to driver inattention, speeding, and failure to yield. In some cases, alcohol or drug impairment plays a role in both driver and pedestrian behaviors.
  • High-Risk Areas for Pedestrians – Accidents frequently happen in urban areas, particularly on high-speed roads and intersections without crosswalks. Poorly lit streets and highways further increase the risk.
  • Steps to Improve Pedestrian Safety – Installing more crosswalks, better lighting, and enforcing speed limits near pedestrian-heavy areas can reduce accidents. Both drivers and pedestrians must remain vigilant to prevent crashes.
  • Legal Consequences for Hit-and-Run Drivers – Fleeing the scene of an accident is a serious offense in Texas, carrying severe penalties, including criminal charges and civil liability for damages.
