Galveston, TX (January 2, 2025) – A wrong-way collision on New Year’s Day left one person dead and four others injured on Seawall Boulevard at 42nd Street.

The incident, which occurred around 1 a.m. on January 1, involved two vehicles. According to investigators from the Galveston Police Department, a driver was heading westbound in the eastbound lane of Seawall Boulevard with no headlights on. This caused a violent crash with a vehicle carrying a family of four.

The wrong-way driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Meanwhile, all four occupants of the struck vehicle, including two adults and two children, were rushed to the UTMB Galveston emergency room for treatment. Authorities reported that two of the victims suffered critical injuries.

The Galveston County Medical Examiner’s Office responded to the scene to assist in the investigation. Police have not yet determined whether alcohol played a factor in the crash, but toxicology results are pending. The crash resulted in extended closures on Seawall Boulevard as crews worked to clear the area and conduct an investigation.

We extend our deepest sympathies to the family involved in this accident.

Wrongful Death Accidents in Texas

Wrongful death accidents tragically impact thousands of families across Texas each year. According to recent statistics, nearly 4,000 fatal car crashes occurred statewide last year, with a significant percentage involving reckless driving or impaired drivers. In many of these cases, grieving families are left with emotional and financial burdens.

Understanding what to do after a wrongful death accident is vital. Below are some insights into this type of legal claim:

  • Who Can File a Claim: Typically, a spouse, children, or parents of the deceased may file a wrongful death claim in Texas.
  • Types of Damages Covered: Families can seek compensation for medical bills, funeral expenses, lost income, and emotional suffering.
  • Importance of Evidence: Building a strong case often involves collecting police reports, eyewitness accounts, and medical records to establish liability.
  • Time Limit to File: In Texas, families generally have two years from the date of death to file a wrongful death claim. However, exceptions may apply in certain circumstances.

For those dealing with the aftermath of a wrongful death, understanding these elements can make the legal process less overwhelming during an already difficult time.
