Pedestrian Accidents in Texas
Texas has a worrying track record when it comes to the safety of pedestrians. The frequency with which pedestrians are fatally injured on the state’s roads has been on an upward path, increasing by close to 30 percent over the last five years. In 2021, pedestrian fatalities accounted for approximately 20 percent of all road deaths in Texas.
Given the vulnerability of pedestrians, who lack the protection to absorb the impact of a collision with a vehicle, they are at a higher risk of sustaining severe or potentially fatal injuries in the event of an accident. Common injuries reported in pedestrian crashes include:
- Broken Bones: Often resulting from the force of impact on a vehicle or the ground. These injuries can be extremely painful for victims, often requiring surgery and casting.
- Internal Organ Injuries: These injuries can occur when the force of an accident causes the body to strike objects or the vehicle itself, potentially leading to life-threatening situations that demand immediate medical attention.
- Severe Cuts and Lacerations: Sharp edges from the vehicle’s structure or shattered glass can inflict deep cuts, which not only result in significant blood loss but may also lead to infection if not properly treated.
