Here’s the Top Ten Safest, Used Cars Under $10,000

Top 10 Safest Used Cars for Under $10,000

Audi and Volvo models hold the first five spots on a U.S. World & News Report 2018 list of “safest used vehicles under $10,000.” It’s not surprising these luxury brands lead the pack since upscale brands tend to be early adopters of safety technology.

The list order reflects rankings by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), test results (where available) from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA), and recall histories. It’s a handy resource for parents looking to buy the first car for a teen, young families or anyone who just wants a car with some of the most life-saving features at an affordable price.

Safety Features Proven to Save Lives

Advances in technology are making vehicles safer than ever before. According to a study by the IIHS, lane departure warning technology – which alerts sleepy or distracted drivers that they are straying into another lane – by itself resulted in an 11% drop in single-vehicle, sideswipe, and head-on crashes in 2015.

But new safety features can add thousands to the cost of a new car. So for those on a budget, finding the sweet spot between affordability and safety is important. Just be aware that some safety features were only offered as add-ons at the time of purchase, so not all vehicles will have all features. Be sure to ask which ones are included in the car you’re considering.

Audi and Volvo have long been known for their emphasis on safety. But Kia and Hyundai, which are known first for affordability, also made the list.

  • 2011 Audi A3 – Luxury small car, $8,199
  • 2010 Audi A4 – Luxury sedan, $8,012
  • 2010 Audi A4 Wagon – Luxury station wagon, $9,815
  • 2011 Volvo C30 – Luxury small compact, $5,500
  • 2010 Volvo C70 – Luxury Hardtop convertible, $8,197
  • 2012 MINI Cooper Countryman – Sporty sedan, $9,573
  • 2011 Hyundai Elantra – Midsize sedan, $7,778
  • 2010 Volkswagen Eos – Upscale convertible, $5,982
  • 2011 Hyundai Genesis – Luxury large car, $9,676
  • 2011 Nissan Juke – Small SUV, $8,031

US News lists 30 vehicles altogether, including cars and SUVs from Kia, Subaru, Mitsubishi, Jeep, Toyota, Acura, Buick, BMW, and Scion, so there’s sure to be a model that fits your style and your budget.

Road safety should be a major concern for us all. Nearly 1.3 million people die in road crashes each year, on average 3,287 deaths a day, according to the National Safety Institute. Another 20-50 million are injured or disabled. More than half of all road traffic deaths occur among young adults ages 15-44, and motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for U.S. teens. Driving a car with the most safety options you can afford is money well spent.
