2017 IKEA Recall Update – IKEA has recalled their Malm style chests and dressers after an eighth child was killed by one of them. Contact IKEA to resolve any issues with their recalled products.

Do you know that manufacturer's warranty card that falls out of the box of a new purchase, along with all those other pieces of paper? The biggest reason to fill it out and send it back is it's how the company is able to contact you if the product has been recalled for a safety reason.

For example, just last year, IKEA recalled 29 million dressers after four children died when the dressers toppled over on them. Nearly one year later, fewer than 500,000 customers have responded to the recall to either get a refund or to be sent special screws to anchor the dresser to the wall. If you had bought one of these dressers and sent back the card, IKEA would have notified you as soon as the danger was identified. IKEA still is trying to reach millions of people who bought this dresser and probably don't know that it carries an unacceptably high risk of falling over unless anchored to the wall.

A potential software glitch that could cause a temporary loss of power steering has forced General Motors to recall more than 690,000 Chevy and GMC pickups from the 2014 model year.

Affected are:

  • 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
  • 2014 GMC Sierra 1500

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the power loss is most likely to occur during slow turns. The loss of power lasts for about one second; however, NHTSA said the loss and sudden return of power steering could cause drivers to lose control of the steering wheel, increasing the chance of a crash. Owners will be notified and dealers will update the software at no charge. To see if your truck is in the recall, go to the NHTSA recall website and type in your VIN number. You can also call Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-800-432-8782 and ask about recall number 17276.

Nissan is in the process of recalling and repairing 515,394 Versa Sedans and Versa Hatchbacks because a driver's front airbag inflator may rupture. If this happens, metal fragments could strike the driver or passengers causing serious injury or death. Affected are:

  • 2007-2011 Versa Sedan
  • 2007-2012 Versa Hatchback

Nissan has been notifying owners. Dealers are replacing the inflator with a new one manufactured by a different supplier, free of charge. Remedy parts are now available, but check with your dealer or contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.

Steering Software Glitch Forces Nissan Infiniti Q50 Recalls

Nissan has issued a recall of some 28,000 Infiniti Q50s because of a potentially serious software problem. The company said the cars' steering system software may experience an error when the ignition is turned on that can alter steering responsiveness and turning radius. If the vehicle does not steer as the driver anticipates, there is an increased risk of a crash, Nissan noted. Affected by the recall are:

  • 2014-2016 model year Infiniti Q50s
  • 2014-2016 Q50 Hybrids

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the vehicles' Direct Adaptive Steering ECU software, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin by August 9, 2016. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.

Power tool manufacturer STIHL has recalled some 8,000 battery-powered hedge trimmers because of a laceration risk to users. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the HSA 65 model trimmer:

  • Can operate faster than expected
  • Can continue running after the trigger is released
  • Can operate by depressing either the trigger or the front handle switch individually

This trimmer was sold June 2010 – April 2016 by various independent dealers nationwide. The recalled trimmer can be identified by “STIHL” and “HSA 65” printed on the side of the battery compartment between the trigger and the loop handle. The hedge trimmer is gray and orange, with a loop handle, removable battery, and a 20-inch hedge trimming blade. STIHL said it had received seven reports of the trigger or front handle switch not operating properly. STIHL said consumers should stop using the recalled trimmer immediately and return it to an authorized STIHL dealer for a free replacement battery-powered hedge trimmer. Questions?
