Car Accident Statistics in Texas

As one of the largest states in the nation, Texas has some of the longest stretches of roads running through it. In 2019, the annual vehicle miles traveled in Texas reached 286.268 billion, an increase of 1.5% over the 282.037 billion traveled in 2018.

Each year, the Texas Department of Transporation releases crash data from the year prior. We gathered the newest data from the agency, and here's how car crash data broke down in 2019:

• 1 person was killed every 2 hours 26 minutes

• 1 person was injured every 2 minutes 3 seconds

• 1 reportable crash occurred every 56 seconds

• There were a total of 3,610 car crash-related fatalities

• Single vehicle, run-off the road crashes resulted in 1,161 deaths, making up 32.16% of all motor vehicle traffic deaths in 2019

• There were 731 people killed in crashes occurring in intersections or related to an intersection

• There were 600 people killed in head-on crashes

• Wednesday, June 5th and Saturday, December 7 were the deadliest days in 2019, with 21 people killed in traffic crashes

• December was the deadliest month with 333 people killed

• There were no deathless days on Texas roads in 2019

How to Reduce the Risk of an Accident
