Houston, TX (February 12, 2025) - A roofing worker suffered severe electrical burns, and multiple homes were damaged in a fire triggered by a power line incident at a townhome community in west Houston on Wednesday afternoon.

The Houston Fire Department responded to the scene on Sugar Hill Drive, near Chimney Rock Road and San Felipe Street, where reports indicated that an electrical current had traveled through the building's metal gutter system. The surge ignited fires in more than six residences and left the workers with extensive injuries.

Neighbors recalled hearing an explosion and seeing the injured man engulfed in flames on the roof. "I had several neighbors call me and tell me there was an explosion and that there was a guy on the roof and that he was on fire," said resident Terry Jones.

Emergency medical personnel transported the worker to an area hospital for treatment of electrical burns across his body. Additionally, a firefighter was hospitalized for heat exhaustion but is expected to recover. Several families were displaced due to fire and water damage affecting multiple townhomes.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances that led to the accident. Additional details, including the identity of the injured worker, have not yet been released.

We extend our thoughts to those injured and their families during this difficult time.

Workplace Accidents in Texas

Houston, TX – One Hurt in Fire Incident on Sugar Hill DrWork-related injuries are unfortunately common in Texas, particularly in industries like construction and roofing. The state consistently ranks among the highest for workplace accidents, with thousands of workers suffering injuries each year. Many of these incidents result from electrical hazards, falls, and unsafe working conditions.

Understanding the risks that workers face is crucial to improving safety. Here are some common causes of workplace injuries in Texas:

  • Electrical Hazards: Construction workers frequently encounter live wires and high-voltage areas, increasing the risk of electrocution and severe burns.
  • Falls from Heights: Roofing, scaffolding, and ladder work pose serious risks, often leading to broken bones, spinal injuries, or traumatic brain injuries.
  • Fire and Explosions: Sparks from electrical malfunctions or gas leaks can ignite fires, leading to catastrophic injuries and property damage.
  • Defective Equipment: Faulty power tools, scaffolding, and protective gear can increase the likelihood of serious workplace injuries.
  • Lack of Proper Training: Workers without proper safety training are at a higher risk of accidents due to improper handling of equipment and failure to follow safety procedures.
