Pedestrian Accidents in Texas

Houston, TX – Pedestrian Fatally Struck on Aldine Bender RdTexas experiences a significant number of pedestrian-related crashes each year. According to the Texas Department of Transportation, thousands of pedestrians are injured annually, with hundreds losing their lives in collisions with vehicles. Many of these accidents occur at intersections, poorly lit areas, or due to driver negligence, such as failing to yield.

Understanding the risks pedestrians face on Texas roadways is crucial. Here are some common factors that contribute to these types of accidents:

  • Low Visibility – Many pedestrian crashes happen at night or in poorly lit areas where drivers have difficulty seeing individuals on the road. Wearing bright or reflective clothing and using crosswalks can help increase visibility.
  • Distracted Driving – Drivers who are texting, eating, or otherwise distracted may not see pedestrians in time to avoid a collision. Even a moment of inattention can lead to tragedy.
  • Jaywalking or Unexpected Roadway Presence – Pedestrians entering the road outside of designated crosswalks or sitting/lying in the street face increased danger. While drivers should always remain vigilant, unexpected pedestrian presence can make it difficult to react in time.
  • Speeding Vehicles – Cars traveling at high speeds require more time to stop. In areas where pedestrians frequently walk, excessive speed increases the likelihood of severe or fatal injuries in a crash.
  • Failure to Yield – Drivers are required to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, but not all do. This failure is a leading cause of pedestrian injuries and deaths.
