Harris County, Texas (January 24, 2025) – Emergency crews in north Houston responded to a seven-vehicle collision that caused significant road closures and left several people injured.

The accident took place on the westbound lanes of the Grand Parkway West (SH-99) near the North Freeway (I-45) during the morning hours on January 23. According to Constable Mark Herman, multiple vehicles were involved in the crash, which has prompted a swift response from EMS and law enforcement personnel.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez has confirmed that black ice on the roadway contributed to the crash. Several individuals were transported to local hospitals by emergency medical services, though specific details regarding the number of victims and their injuries are not yet available.

As a result of the crash, the westbound lanes of SH-99 between Hardy Tollway and the North Freeway remain closed. Traffic is being redirected onto I-45 North while crews work to de-ice the roadway and remove the wreckage. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is actively treating the icy conditions to prevent further incidents.

Law enforcement officials continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. Drivers in the area are advised to remain cautious, especially as winter weather creates dangerous driving conditions.

Our thoughts are with those injured in this accident, and we hope for their full recovery.

Car Accidents in Texas

Texas experiences a substantial number of car accidents annually, with weather-related crashes posing an increased risk during the winter months. In 2023 alone, over 500,000 crashes were reported statewide. Factors like black ice are particularly hazardous, as it forms a nearly invisible layer on roadways, reducing traction and increasing the likelihood of accidents.

There are several important precautions drivers can take during icy or hazardous conditions:

  • Drive Slowly: Reducing speed allows for better control on slippery surfaces.
  • Keep Your Distance: Maintain a larger following distance to allow for safer stopping.
  • Avoid Sudden Braking: Abrupt stops on icy roads can cause vehicles to skid.
  • Prepare for Emergencies: Keep extra supplies in your vehicle, such as warm clothing, a flashlight, and water.

If you or someone you love has been injured in a car accident, acting quickly can help protect your rights.
