Deer Park, TX (October 13, 2024) – A hydrogen sulfide leak at a Houston-area oil refinery claimed the lives of at least two workers on Thursday, October 10. The leak prompted urgent warnings for nearby residents to remain indoors, although authorities later confirmed there was no public danger.
Nearly 36 individuals were either treated at the scene or transported to local hospitals following the incident, according to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez. Due to the hazardous conditions, Gonzalez reported that investigators were unable to enter the plant for hours and that the area would likely remain inaccessible until Friday.
The refinery, located in Deer Park, is operated by Pemex, Mexico’s state-owned oil company. The investigation into the cause of the leak is ongoing, and officials are continuing to assess the situation to ensure safety before proceeding further.
We hope the injured victims recover quickly.
We offer our sympathies to the families of the victims killed in this incident.
