A 28-year-old tanker truck driver ran a red light and was struck by a car on Texas State Highway 69 near Mineola in September 2011. The truck's fuel tanks ruptured in the collision and exploded in flames, sending both drivers to the hospital with serious injuries and starting a grass fire near the intersection. According to News-journal.com, several bystanders witnessed the accident, which is still under investigation.
While most auto collisions aren't as dramatic as the Texas truck accident just described, any accident provokes anxiety and emotional stress. Yet responding appropriately both at the scene and afterwards is very important.
After the Accident, Step By Step
Stay at the Scene
Never leave the scene of an accident, especially if someone has been injured or killed. Leaving the scene before authorities arrive may place you at risk for criminal "hit-and-run" penalties. If you're in a deserted area, however, be cautious about stopping or leaving your vehicle. Instead, drive to the nearest police station and report the accident.
Check on Others
Make sure others involved in the accident are okay before assessing your vehicle damage. If someone is injured, help them if you can, but don't try to move them if they're unconscious or suffering neck or back pain.
Call 911
If you or someone else has been injured, or if vehicles are seriously damaged, call 911 to summon the police and rescue personnel. Once they arrive, jot down their names and badge numbers and ask them to file a police report.
Exchange Information
Cordially exchange pertinent information with other drivers, including names, phone numbers, addresses, drivers' license numbers, license plate numbers and insurance information.
Call Your Insurance Agent
Give your insurance agent a full and truthful account of your accident as soon as you can, along with photos of the damage. Expect an insurance valuation for damages to your car and get two estimates for the repair.
Track Your Medical Treatment
Keep a written diary of medical treatment you receive as a result of the motor vehicle accident, including the doctors and specialists you visited.
Contact an Attorney
If you have been injured or suffered significant damage to your vehicle in a truck or other motor vehicle accident contact an experienced attorney. A lawyer can advise you of your rights, discuss your available options and advocate on your behalf.
